Acupuncture for Anxiety and Stress in Rockville, Maryland

Anxiety has become one of the most common health concerns we see. Life in the DC metro area is demanding, and the pressure to hold everything together all the time can leave your nervous system permanently on edge. Racing thoughts, tight chest, difficulty sleeping, trouble focusing, and snapping at people you love can all be signs that you’re dysregulated.

Acupuncture is one of the most effective tools we have for calming an overactivated nervous system. We don’t numb it or distract: rather, we help the nervous system to reset.

What Happens to Your Body During Anxiety

Anxiety is essentially your nervous system stuck in "fight or flight," or the sympathetic state. In health, we’re able to alternate between the sympathetic and parasympathetic (“rest and digest”) states, but when we’re chronically anxious, we get stuck in this '“fight or flight” mode. Because you’re stuck in this on position, you’re not able to rest the way you’re designed to, and this takes a toll on nearly every system in the body. Sleep suffers, digestion gets iffy, hormones go bananas, and the immune system struggles. Getting back to feeling like yourself requires getting your nervous system out of survival mode.

How Acupuncture Treats Anxiety

Acupuncture works on anxiety through multiple mechanisms. Treatment stimulates the vagus nerve, which activates the parasympathetic nervous system (that coveted "rest and digest" state), directly counteracting the stress response. It also regulates cortisol and other stress hormones, modulates neurotransmitter activity (including serotonin and dopamine), and reduces inflammation, which is increasingly linked to anxiety and depression.

Most patients notice a distinct shift in their nervous system state during or immediately after treatment. Treatment induces a deep calm that can last for days and becomes more durable with each successive session.
